<br>A Training Course on the Integration of Gender Standards in the Work of the Public Prosecution

In Collaboration between the Institute of Law, the Palestinian Judicial Institute and the Public Prosecution, a training course on the integration of gender standards in the work of the Public Prosecution was held on 1 July 2011. This training course is part of the project "Developing  curricula and training of judges, prosecutors, lawyers and local government," funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and focuses on training on gender issues, aiming  to incorporate it into the work of the target groups of the project.

In his speech, the Director of the Institute of Law, Dr. Ghassan Faramand, emphasized the importance of judicial training and training of prosecutors, being the main pillars of justice in Palestine. He pointed to the development of judicial training, based primarily on a strategy that aims at empowering and training the various components of the justice sector

The Director of the Palestinian Judicial Institute, Mr. Asaad Mubarak, explained the areas for further cooperation between the Judicial Institute and the Institute of Law at BZU, which includes training, development of professional programs and legal studies. He considered that this session is important for the work of the Public Prosecution, since it contributes to the empowerment of prosecutors in the gender field, which will reflect on their work and profession with more knowledge and skills.

And in his address, on behalf of His Excellency the Attorney General, Dr. Ahmad Barak, Head of the Prosecution expressed the Public Prosecution’s interest in training in all areas to upgrade readiness of prosecutors, reiterating that the training theme is central in their work and that it requires accurate understanding. Dr. Barak also confirmed that the Judicial Institute is the first training home for judges and prosecutors alike and thanked the Judicial Institute and the Institute of Law for their role in making the training course a success.

Trainer on the first day of the training, Ms. Sama Uouaida, explained that interest in gender issues commenced in 1990s with a focus on mainstreaming gender concepts and raising awareness in different sectors with a special focus on the justice, prosecution and police sectors. She also pointed out that tackling gender means considering the particularities of both women and men in order to apply fair procedures and respect human and developmental rights of both groups. She also reiterated on the importance of investing in human resources in order to achieve justice.

The session is being held at the headquarters of the Palestinian Judicial Institute in Ramallah, and will last for a period of (5) days, scheduled within two weeks during 1 – 9 July, 2011, in which (19) members of the public prosecution from the various governorates of the West Bank, in addition of a group of specialized trainers, who will train on a number of topics.
